Resident Owls have fledglings!

Our resident Great Horned Owl family has made an appearance!

Great Horned Owls lay 2 eggs in January or February in a nest they reclaimed from either crows or hawks.   They are the largest of the owls that live in Colorado, and are fearless enough attack and kill skunks and porcupines!  That, in combination with their striped feather patterns, has led them to be sometimes called “Flying Tigers.”

Some traditions believe the Owls are messengers from the Spirit World. They certainly creatures of mystery and magic. Thoes tufts of hair look like ears but they aren’t used for hearing. in any case, they are so beautiful and we are honored to have their presence on our sacred land.
